Hey, Check This Out! Blog
I read the article “As Humans stay indoors, wild animals take back what was once theirs”. As I was reading it, I considered a moral dilemma. I realized just how much we were oppressing nearly every animal’s “right to roam”. Humanity finally leaves, and they are returning to what they considered to be their territory. I realized we aren’t exactly coexisting with nature, we are dominating it. Reading the part about the turtles seeing artificial light on the beach and in their efforts to get to it, they die, I felt revolted. It’s not exactly “humans vs nature” though, either. If you think about it, humanity came from nature. But seeing these creatures returning to what was once theirs, I couldn’t help but think maybe it would be better if we just remained inside. Reading the horrible things described in the article, from the proliferation of illegal wildlife trafficking, to the survival rate of baby turtles to reach adulthood, I couldn’t help but feel slight contempt for fellow humans. But on the other hand, reading about China taking action against wildlife trade and the US and Congress voting to cease attempts at illegal wildlife trade, I also felt slight pride. Maybe humanity is too selfish and self-centered to consider anything else on the planet except themselves, but one way or another, I think things have a way of correcting themselves before they get too dire. I’m sure I'll be eating my words when the planet burns up, but I hope I don't have to. There will (hopefully) always be people who care, and if they care enough, then real change will be brought about.
