GPHC: Blog - Evaluate the Dow Stock Market this Year
The Dow is one of the most prominent stock market indexes. I have analyzed the data in the Dow and have made some observations. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a crash. In February of this year, the market was trading at $29,000 and hit its lowest point this March trading at around $18,000. This decrease is a record! The pandemic has had a massive effect on the U.S. stock market and economy as a whole. There were actually multiple major drops in March of this year, three of the largests in U.S. history. Because of the virus, millions of people are unemployed and aren't getting a stable income. Thankfully, the market recovered a little bit, but we never know when things could go downhill again..
Yesterday, crude oil prices actually dropped to negative for the first time in who knows how many years. This is due to a contract falling through in the midst of the pandemic. This is increasing the already existing fears of a recession. It is hard to tell where the market will be in the upcoming months because the amount of unknowns in his pandemic outweigh the amount of knowns. If quarantine is lifted in the next month or two, there are chances the market will recover, but will still have scars. It has recovered many times throughout history. When things go back to normal (or the new normal) things will start to improve again when the economy starts to stabilize.
I read a very interesting article yesterday referencing when in 2005, George W. Bush stated that “If we wait for a pandemic to appear, it will be too late to prepare.” Looking back, we didn't prepare and look where we are now. There are so many people struggling right now and I feel if the country were better prepared, we could have handled this better, especially referring to the government. Actually, in 2018, Donald Trump fired the entire pandemic response team. Little did he know what was coming next. Referring to the Bush and Trump examples, we can associate this with sovereignty. With elections coming up, this is a big factor in determining our vote.
