Hey, check this out!
This week I have decided to reflect off of National Geographic's article on How to feed the world without destroying the planet. Today, Agriculture already uses half of our worlds vegetated land and consumes 90 percent of all the water used by humanity. Studies have shown that it takes 19,010 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef. The article states that in order to cut down pollution along with other environmental impacts of farming, we would have to prevent more land from being converted for agricultural purposes and find ways to improve feed quality, and manage grazing by finding better crop breeding techniques. The article also talks about ways to reduce the amount of food lost and wasted. I completely agree with this but the issue now is that for high meat consumers, the demand for meat goes up, and with competition between meat companies, what tends to happen is companies will do whatever in order to produce the best product, in the shortest amount of time in order to fulfill the consumers needs. One of the ways that we can succeed in reducing the amount of land used for agricultural reasons and reducing the amount of food and water used/wasted a year is to go plant based. While growing up we see advertisement on how meat is high in protein and is needed. What most people don't pay attention to is the what the negative contributes are that follow along with that. While being a meat consumer, you can automatically assume that their cholesterol is going to be higher than a person who has been living off of plant based foods. Not only is this better for the environment but it is a more sustainable way to decrease chances of obesity in our society today.
