GPHC: Blog - Evaluate the Dow Stock Market this Year

What has happened in the Stock Market?
The stock market, when looking at the Dow Jones has taken a plumet since the start of corona. Beginning around February 19th the market was trading at around $29,000 and hit it’s low on March 23rd at around 18,000. In this period the Dow Jones dropped a significant 10.4% in just over a week, a record fall in our current era. There are fears now that the crash of the market, the Dow Jones, and other global markets, will send the world into a Global Recession
What is driving this?
Much of what is driving this decline in the Dow Jones is the Corona virus that has spread to become a global pandemic. There are large amounts of uncertainty in shareholders right now. Before the pandemic investors were able to pick up signals and calculate when there would be a fall. But right now? Nobody knows what is going to happen within the week, much less six months from now. There has also been forced selling and policy fumbles within the Dow Jones market, and people are wanting cash in hand, for fears that the banks could fail them. I would argue that inflation is also a possibility if not the likely outcome at this point, with all the money that the government is pumping into the economy to keep the US afloat. This could scare investors off.
What do you think will happen in the next 6 months to 1 year?
I think it depends on how much our government is doing or not doing, and how we’re being careful of what we are doing with our money at this point. Based on the history of the Dow, it typically takes them a couple of quarters to recover, but it usually bounces back. It has done so with the Great Depression and the 2008 Financial Crisis. It is my opinion that we will be able to recover from this as well.
Oil could also dictate how the Dow Jones does at this point. Oil prices are exceptionally low right now, and have fallen below $0 a barrel. Exxon Mobil, one of the heads of the Dow Jones in power, is an oil and gas industry that is suffering from this fall in prices.
Finally, how will does/will this affect at least ONE of the following concepts: power, sovereignty, development, sustainability, globalization, human rights, justice, peace, conflict.

My hope in all of this is that the market crash will help us to develop as a more prepared and well oriented country. I think many companies as well as the government were not prepared for the economic crisis that the corona virus has brought on. I hope that we will be able to learn from this, and implement procedures if instances like this were ever to happen again. I hope that it will lend more support to those in areas of lesser economic wealth, as many people are struggling to stay afloat right now.
