Impeachment Blog

I read an opinion piece by the Editorial Board of the New York Times in regards to the current impeachment. This past Friday, Republican senators voted against additional witness testimonies and documents, a vote that will ultimately mean Trump’s acquittal. According to this article, this vote confirms that the Senate Republicans have failed. In not seeking the truth, they have abdicated their duty and left America guardless against a dangerous president.

The Board argues that Trump was never actually on a true trial because every other impeachment trial in American history has included witnesses. If a trial were to be executed, all evidence points that witnesses would not be in Trump’s favor. Given the significance of the incidents that led to Trump’s impeachment, specifically his extortion of Ukraine by explicitly offering hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid in exchange for investigations into his political rival, Joe Biden, the Senate’s blatant disregard and refusal to accept evidence indicates that there is essentially nothing he can do that will make them vote for his removal.

I think this is a scary idea because this means he can get away with almost anything. With the Senate behind him, Trump is a definite threat to the upcoming elections. The article concludes by saying although the senate may acquit Trump, it will not be able to exonerate him as Trump is the most corrupt president in modern times as demonstrated through the continuing investigations by the House, cases by the Supreme Court surrounding shady finances, and the behavior of the man himself.

I think the impeachment has been drawn out long enough and that unfortunately with the current senate there is not likely to be a removal of the president. If the senate is not willing to execute a true trial then the impeachment has come to a standstill and should not get as much media focus. I think the most we can do now is hope that the American people see that Trump has abused his presidential power on multiple occasions and do not allow him to win the next election.
