Thomas Hobbes: English philosopher (1588-1679), Fun Fact! Hobbes was the name inspiration for the character in the famous comic book series Calvin and Hobbes. Hobbes was influenced by the English Civil War. He lived through it and that led him to believe even if government had a bad king that it would be better than to have a nasty revolution. That is how the philosophy "the state of nature" was created a time that is supposed to be before any king or government. His ideal government is where there is an absolute monarchy he believed that life is "nasty, bruitish, and short." and that people are jerks and that is why we need one king that holds all the power to set boundaries and rule.
John Locke: English philosopher (1632-1704) Fun Fact! Locke was one of the first philosophers to not have a beard! (possibly not true but if you look through generations of philosophers you can notice that the beards get smaller). Locke doesn't believe that everyone is jerks unlike Hobbes. He believes that everyone starts with a "blank slate" until they begin to experience different situations and your brain begins to take shape. Everybody is created equal. He believe that the state of nature wasn't the worst idea but it would better than a bad king. Revolution is necessary when you have a bad government. Locke's ideal government would be a represented democracy, he believe that a represented democracy is that nobody has too much power. Very similar to America's ideal government "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Swiss philosopher (1712-1778). Rousseau disagrees with Locke and Hobbes about human nature. He believed that people deep down are good except when society corrupts them and influences them to become, well jerks. His state of nature was that people were noble savages, that before government life was peaceful and there was true freedom until governments were created. Rousseau ideal government was a Direct Democracy. The less government was involved the better. The more revolution the better, revolution just puts the power to the people and government is just arborchery so might as well over through it every once in a while.
Izabella Curtis: Ib student (2002-now) Fun Fact! Curtis has to write this blog for GPHC to pass Mr. Roddy's class! I believe that the best form of government is a government that is not focused on being republicans and democrats. I believe that voters should vote for candidates that they think will advocate and provide their voice in the community and have similar ideals and logic. I shouldn't matter if you are republican or democratic. Vote for someone you believe will provide the best form of government. Also vote for someone who you respect, and are proud of. So hey if you are proud of our lying, sexist, racist cheeto looking president and believe that he will do our country in the most efficient way...then vote for him.
