Blog Political Philosophy and Foundation of Government

Rousseau said that people form government in order to create groups in which the members have more power to make decisions. Rousseau says that when people come together to form government bodies they mutually assure each others protection, this is shown in "As soon as this multitude is thus united in a body, one cannot harm one of the members without attacking the whole body. It is even less possible that the body can be harmed without the members feeling it." He also talks about how when people with mutual interests come together they can work to each others benefit, this is shown in. "Thus duty and interest equally obligate the two contracting parties to come to one another's aid, and the same men should seek to combine in this twofold relationship all the advantages that result from it." Rousseau talks about how working together is to the benefit of all those included in the sovereign and I would have to agree with him. As Rousseau said, whenever people work together in groups they make agreements to help each other achieve their goals, and thus, all the goals get achieved more easily or more quickly, or to some benefit over working alone. I do also like what Rousseau said about how even though people work together as a whole body in a sovereign in order to achieve shared objectives and goals, members of the body may have their own values and interests that they can pursue as their own private will. I cannot speak as to how I would establish a government because I know that there are so many things that I haven't even begun to consider. A perfect or even a mutually agreeable method of government has not been found in thousands of years and I hardly believe that I will be able to come up with one.
