NATO in response to the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014, since then allied leaders have called on Russia to withdraw their forces from Crimea because of the illegitimacy and unpredictability. However Russia's allies aren't just focused on the invasion and annexation of Crimea, Russia has had a number of irregular military activity near NATO's borders. They've also done several things that do not comply with international norms such as their nerve agent attack on a UK intelligence and his daughter on March 4th of 2018, Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Skripal had been poisoned with Novichok agent in Salisbury, UK. The attack was believed to have been arranged and approved by the Russian state… How did this happen? The investigators of this attack believe the Skripals first came in contact with the Novichok at their own front door they also found traces of the agent in the pub and restaurant the Skripals had went to later that day. Police say that they found the Skripals on a bench just outside of the restaurant, completely unconscious. They were then immediately taken to the hospital. The two suspects who were believed to have preformed the attack, Alexander Petrov and Rusian Bashirov had arrived at Gatwick Airport with Russian passports, flying in from Moscow they then stayed at a hotel in London and the next day showed up in Salisbury to do their job of poisoning Sergei and Yulia then took off back to Moscow all in the same day. Later an interview was held with Petrov and Bashirov the two men claimed they were merely tourists visiting the town’s cathedral. Then a later study found that Petrov had previously visited the UK 3 other times in the two years prior to the attempted murder. They also found many bizarre and unfamiliar stamps and a missing biography page in Petrov’s passport. The Investigation group Bellingcat later discovered that Petrov was actually either Colonial Anatoliy Chepiga who is a Russian military officer or Alexander Mishkin who has been a part of Russian intelligence since 2010. Russia denies all allegations of this attempted murder of a former Russian spy, then restated the claim about the two suspects just being tourists. In 2019 the NAC supported the US's decision to withdraw from the INF treaty due to the material breach Russia had. All of this worries Russia's allies seeing as they have had a line of irresponsible behavior, NATO is still figuring out how they will approach this in a logical manner. So far NATO has enhanced its deterrence and defense position and will continue to remain open to communication, in a sense they're trying to remain as neutral as possible.
