United States attack on Iraq and Saddam Hussein on the basis of concerns about Iraq’s possession of
weapons of mass destruction. From March 20, 2003 to May 1, 2003, the United States launched an
invasion of Iraq alongside Australia, Poland, and the UK. According to president George W. Bush, the
invasion aimed “to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support for
terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people." According to a poll, 64% of Americans wanted military action to
be taken (hard power), but 63% wanted President Bush to find a diplomatic solution (soft power).
Several US allies opposed the invasion, saying that there was no evidence of weapons of mass
destruction in Iraq and that invading the country was not justified.
