Interdependence
1. There was an attack against a battalion near an army base in Mali. The head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali said that these actions won't do anything to stop trying to maintain peace in Mali. The attack happened a couple days after the 74th annual UN general assembly, in which security in Mali was a very important topic. Currently, there is a search and rescue mission going on for the troops that are missing. The UN has stated that they will "spare no effort" in supporting the Malian military in order to combat acts of terrorism like this in the future.
2. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced it's 1 million dollar investment into a Tunisia based company managed by Flat6Labs. This investment was made in order to support tech entrepreneurship, specifically at supporting women as well. The IFC is a member of the World Bank Group, which is partnering with Womens Entrepreneurship Finance Initiative, or WE-FI. WE-FI is a group that helps women in developing countries gain access to be able to become entrepreneurs. Because of this, Flat6Labs is expected to start investing more in helping women specifically gain more access to resources to benefit them.
3. The NATO Deputy Security General gave an important speech in Germany talking about Germany's contributions to them. The General, Rose Gottemoeller, was very keen on the fact of new technologies changing the way we look at defense and security. This speech was given to a group of high-level officials hosted by the German council of foreign relations. They specifically talked about strategic strength following the end of the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty. She was very strong willed about the fact that NATO allies need to stay loyal to the preservation and disarmament of such weapons.
4. Last year, President Trump resigned the Korea free trade agreement the US has between us and Korea. This was the first bilateral trade deal of his administration, which also benefits both parties. The revisement specifically includes opening up the Korean market to more American products. For Korea, the US is going to continue imposing a 25% tariff on all Korean trucks until 2041. Some analysts said that the new agreement will help secure more American jobs than the previous one signed under the Obama administration.
