Interdependence

Any UN organization:
This month, South Africa assumes rotational presidency of the UN Security Council. They are trying to focus more on issues in Africa, especially the Western Sahara region. South Africa’s rotational presidency will start at the same time as the opening session on the UN’s Fourth Committee, which is the Special Committee on Decolonization. The Western Sahara is one out of 17 territories looked out for by the committee that is not self-governing. Right now the Western Sahara territory is occupied by Morocco. This is an issue because Morocco is requesting full autonomy as the only resolution.

Any IGO:
In June of 2018, The Trump administration announced that they would be removing the US from the UN Human Rights Council. It was announced by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. In their statement, Nikki Haley made it clear that the US is still committed to human rights, but rather they feel that the UN Human Rights Council is hypocritical and that they mock human rights. She also states that the Trump administration believes the council has a bias against Israel. In the year prior, Nikki Haley announced that the council needed to pay more attention to countries like China, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia or the US would leave. Turns out she stood by her threat.

Collective Security or Hybrid IGO:
The EU is a hybrid IGO, and the ECB is a part of that. A big topic right now in the ECB is thinking about cryptocurrency. They are talking about whether or not stablecoins are an effective form of payment for the future. While they are not currently super efficient, an opinion viewed by the ECB President, Mario Draghi, they are being looked at as an opportunity to stabilize the financial system, and increase the safety of payments within market infrastructures. The ECB is also looking at the pros and cons of potentially releasing a digital euro to the public. They are saying that it is not a matter of technology, but rather a matter of the cost effectiveness and other benefits that are currently holding them back.

Treaty or Strategic Alliance:
Powerful states may decide to form new alliances with less powerful states for mutual benefits. One example is the Minsk agreement which caused a Ukrainian ceasefire in 2014. There was an immediate bilateral ceasefire with Ukraine. Both sides had to withdraw their heavy weaponry into a buffer zone. There was also an agreement on both sides to release the hostages and illegally detained by the military. Ukraine was to have all of their government control restored over the war zones, such as Donetsk and Luhansk.
