Interdependence
- Emily RoutbortUN Human Rights Council
- In 2018 the Trump administration announced that the US is withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council. The Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley announced the decision in a joint statement. This decision doesn’t come with surprise because the administration regularly criticized the 47-member body for a variety of “failures.” One failure being the unsertian rights documents of many of the UN’s member countries. Another being the council’s bias against Israel. Pompeo put it in simple words when he said, “The U.N. Human Rights Council is not capable of fulfilling its mission without reform — and those desired reforms remain unfulfilled.”
- Trump plans tariffs on EU goods after winning a $7.5 billion WTO ruling
- “The US plans to announce the final list of retaliatory tariffs on EU goods after the WTO’s ruling on illegal aircraft subsidies to Airbus, according to a senior U.S. trade official.” The US plans to force a 10 percent tariff on aircraft imported from EU and a 25 percent rate on other goods. This news came shortly after the WTO gave Trump the “ok” to impose tariffs on $7.5 billion worth of EU exports yearly in relation for non legal government aid to Airbus.
