UN Organization
- UN Human Rights Council
- The UN Human Rights Council has voted to send a team into Venezuela to investigate alleged human rights abuses, which include torture, disappearances, detentions, and extrajudicial executions. A resolution presented by Latin American and other countries was adopted by the 47 member U.N council. This decision was expected, as the head of the council Michelle Bachelet was concerned by the countries actions during a visit in June. The “fact-finding mission” the UN is sending a team on will present its findings within the next year. Jorge Valero, the Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations, called the mission a “hostile initiative.” Needless to say, they strongly impose this resolution.
Any IGO
- The World Bank
- On September 30, 2019, The World Bank approved a proposal that will give Mozambique $130 million (when set equivalent to U.S dollars) in disaster relief. This is in response to Cyclone’s Idai and Kenneth, which struck Mozambique just 5-6 weeks apart. The damages caused by the cyclones amount to $3 billion, and 1.7 million people were affected. The World Bank is going to be raising these funds from primarily two countries, the Netherlands (who will be immediately contributing $60 million), and Germany (who will co-finance the rest with the Netherlands). The funds raised by The World Bank will be used to rebuild public and private infrastructure, strengthening climate resilience, and restore the lives of people affected.
Collective Security/Hybrid IGO
- African Union
- On September 7th, 2019, the African Union announced that they had lifted their suspension of Sudan’s membership after a three month freeze. The suspension was installed while Sudan’s new Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, was setting up his first cabinet and a civilian led government, which the country was in drastic need of after their longtime dictator, Omar al-Bashir, was forced out. The suspension started in June because of acts of violence against a protest group were committed by the ruling military council. The African Union implemented this suspension as a way to try and force peaceful negotiation between Sudan’s military, protest groups, and civilian parties. A power-sharing deal, brokered by the AU and Ethiopia, established said cabinet and a military-civilian council. The council will run the country for three years until an election can be held. As of now, this seems to have worked, as the AU is hailing the work of the Sudanese and the Sudanese have reaffirmed their commitment to the AU.
Treaties/Strategic Alliances
- Minsk Protocol
- A report recently came out that stated 5 years after the Minsk Protocol was established, Moscow has not fulfilled any of the commitments it signed too. The foreign minister of Ukraine said that since the agreement was signed, Ukraine has lost 14,000 people. He also claims that while Ukrainian officials are working hard at a peace agreement, Russia has not cooperated. Although this seems shocking, It’s worth noting that this information comes from a Ukrainian official. There’s a very good chance that the information is doctored or biased. Russia has not responded to this report.
