Sanctions Related to Iran
So for my blog I chose to dive deeper into one of the examples given in the book which was the sanctions that the U.S. and the Europeon Union put on Iran. Now, the reason they put these sanctions on Iran is because of Iran’s refusal to take the correct course of action in regards to their nuclear program. In 2012, President Barack Obama took action against Iran because of its refusal, this is where these sanctions came into play. The sanctions really limited Iran's ability to benefit from the international community as no one would buy their products, more specifically, oil. Iran is in part known for its large oil industry and as countries began to establish relations elsewhere Iran grew weaker and weaker. This eventually helped lead to the eventual collapse of Iran’s currency which also happened in 2012.
This is without a doubt a hard power move. It was necessary but a hard power play nonetheless. As Iran was left without many international options because of these sanctions they were left to fend completely for themselves. However, at the time that these sanctions were placed the U.S. made it clear that despite these actions they were still open to more diplomatic solution.
