COVID-19 Blog

At the end of december the World Health Organization (WHO) was made aware of a group of  pneumonia cases with an unknown cause in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. In January, Chinese officials announced that they have identified a new virus:  coronavirus (CoV) or COVID-19 and in March it was declared a global pandemic. COVID-19 has had a massive impact on the lives of everyone in the world whether it be in the economy or in social lives with social isolation. The virus will change the face of the world as we know it and already is. Hospitals are filling up and millions of people can't get appropriate care. People are losing jobs and companies are learning what is essential and what isn't. This will have a massive impact on our world moving forward.
What the piece said about underdeveloped countries is serious, because highly developed countries like the U.S. have a responsibility to help its foreign partners, but are already struggling with the stability of their own economy. We have more ability to hel-p other countries when we are in an economically stable place and things have settled down. And this is only the beginning. The scary thing is that we have no idea when this will end and how bad it will get, so who knows how bad this will be when it finally hits these smaller and undeveloped nations.
I also feel that this pandemic will heavily impact the upcoming presidential election. We are seeing first hand how this is being and handled and treated by our current president and can assess our priorities and beliefs. It is thought like these that help me shape my political views and why I vote the way I do.

I want to conclude this blog with a message (and a small rant). PLEASE STAY HOME!!!!!! All of the myths we hear about how the virus does not affect young people is nonsense and even if you don't care if you get the virus you can become a carrier by going out and can potentially pass it onto someone else. Going out and living life normally in these times is selfish and harmful not only to yourself and others. Again, please stay home because there are so many people who can't, so do it for them. The more careful you are and the more precaution you take, the quicker this will end!!!!!!! Do your civic duty, stay home and flatten the curve!

I completely agree. Not only has this pandemic affected the day to day lives of US citizens but will ultimately impact the presidential election. That is why our current president is being a boot-leg doctor and almost denying that this is happening. He's making claims that just are not possible for anyone to know yet. That is the scariest part, we don't know anything about this. I agree that our economy isn't stable enough for us to help underdeveloped countries even though we have an obligation to help in anyway. One thing I can't believe is the insensitivity politicians are being towards this whole crisis. Just because our older community is not longer contributing as consumers in our economy doesn't mean that they should be insensitive. Just my thoughts :) Beautifully written thank you Zoey!

I agree with you completely Zoey. I like how you tied the election and presidents into this because I hadn't really thought about it. I definitely think that the way Trump and other candidates deal with the situation will show who really is a good fit for the country and where all the candidates' values lie. I also like what you said about helping other countries. I definitely think that the US should help, but it's also crucial that we get our own economy as stable as we can and make sure that we're taking care of people in the US who have COVID - 19 before we help other countries because as it is right now, I don' think our economy is stable enough to be able to help.

There are large amounts of uncertainty in this time. This is something that many of us have never experienced before, and it is something that nobody (besides Bill Gates) could have prepared for. However, many countries in Africa have been dealing with other diseases like Ebola for a long time now. I appreciated how you took a stance of mentioning the upcoming elections, because it is very importnat that our next president will take the lead on this, and hopefully develop methods to help not only our countries, but those surrounding us.

I completely agree with you about how scary this is for everyone given that lack of knowledge most people have on how to respond in a situation like this. It is also definitely interesting to see how government officials are responding in different countries and the speed at which they address things. The main thing is just that there is no clear cut right or wrong way to handle this and with so many unknowns it is hard to come to a consensus on what to do.
