Country Remains Divided Over Trump's Impeachment

Begging as early as President Trump's election there has been talk of impeachment. Many democrats predicted that President Trump would abuse his power in office for personal gain above the democracy and well being of the country. The predictions have been proven true as President Trump has divided the country through going against the idea that everyone of every race, gender, and creed are created equal. Even members of his own party have turned their backs on him based on his egotistic decisions. President Trump has demanded that public officials put his desires above the well being of their duty to the public which has in turn created a lot of distrust in the government system. However, a poll posted on February 2, 2020 shows that even through the recent impeachment decisions the country remains divided over his impeachment. In fact, the percentage that believes his should be impeached has stayed fairly stead since October 2019, as shown in a poll.
Between December and late January the percentage of people who believe he should be impeached actually went from 48% to 46%. Not surprisingly, the majority of people who believe he should be impeached are from the Democratic Party. However, only about 70%-80% of republicans are still in support of President Trump. When asking republicans what they think of the impeachment trial the words they used to describe it are ridiculous, wasteful, and sham. A majority, being 52%, of registered voters do believe that Trump has abused his power by asking a foreign country to investigate his political opponent to influence the election. In addition, 53% of voters believe that he obstructed Congress by not cooperating with the investigation for his impeachment and demanding employees to do the same.
In my opinion, I do believe President Trump should not be in office. All in all, he has made it clear that his interests are not in favor of the people of The United States and puts his wants above all else, as proven by his many actions, including the travel band that was put on people of certain religions. This is not a quality of a good leader who should be in charge of a country as powerful as The United States. However, looking beyond the poor qualities that President Trump presents I find it even more important to look at what would occur if he does in fact get impeached. As a result of his impeachment the new president would be the current Vice President, Mike Pence. Mike Pence does not show better potential as running the country. In fact, in many ways they are similar in prioritizing the alienation of certain minorities. For Pence, he prioritizes the alienation of the gay community. With the next presidential elections coming later this year I feel just waiting it out is the best thing for the country. Neither, Trump or Pence have shown their ability to uphold the qualities and ideals necessary for a President but dealing with that is just a consequence of electing him in the first place.
