Interdependence
Any UN organization
UNESCO
Recently in Latin America UNESCO has trained a significant number of judicial actors in the fight against impunity. This is all about the protection of freedom of expression, press freedom and safety of journalists in the Latin American and the Caribbean region. This is especially important for journalists as according to the article 9 out of 10 journalist based murders still go unpunished. This is another step towards resolving this issue. This is the work of not only UNESCO but also the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, a strong partner of UNESCO’s within these southern regions.
Any IGO
EU
An article I read and found very interesting talked about the EU but not directly about what it had done in recent events. I’m sorry if this doesn’t qualify but I found it really interesting. Essentially states within the EU have beene pushing at the EU as a whole to “pursue a more cohesive and unitary based foreign policy.” Note that in the past most all member states within the EU have conducted their foreign fairs on their own. However, in recent years the international atmosphere has shifted greatly becoming more contentious. Despite the fact that the EU was created as a step toward peace within its borders many argue it has also done a great deal for the world at large, regardless, member states believe it shouldn’t be pushed around. In turn, members of the EU wish that it would become more active in global affairs. This continues to be an ongoing debate because of the responsibility it would take on.
Collec=tive Security or Hybrid IGO
AU
In recent news the AU has lifted their suspension on Sudan’s membership to the AU. This ended the 3 month freeze period following the removal of the long term President Omar al-Bashir as well a civilian based government is being attempted in Sudan. This ban was put on Sudan early last June by the AU’s Peace and Security Council following the violent act against civilian protesters by the ruling military council. Dozens of people were killed and many were injured in this standoff between the civilians and military. After 16 weeks of protesting Sudan’s military arrested and removed al-Bashir.
Treaties or Strategic Alliances
Taiwan
In terms of strategic alliances we can look at Taiwan as we did last week. Taiwan is in a rather desperate situation with China at the moment and as they are losing support from other countries worldwide they still have one very important relationship and or alliance, the United States. Essentially the United States serves as the tough guy for Taiwan because if China were to make any sort of move on Taiwan the United States would take it personally in part because of its worldwide ego. In addition, the United States is currently handling a somewhat of a trade war with China in turn Taiwan sees the U.S. as their hopeful savior.
